I'm still trying things out with it & i'm by no means a pro at all but i thought you guys might like to know it's there & it's free, something Canon should have done :-) Magic Lantern, the advanced (and unofficial) HDSLR firmware developers, has finally cracked the Canon 7D and now has an early alpha build available for download. It really is an amazing bit of coding & it's free, 100% stable, you do NOT flash the firmware at all, you just format your card, copy the files then run it on the camera, next time you restart it just runs alongside the existing Canon Menus using the Trash button to bring the menu's up, swap your memory card & it's gone, it's that easy. now you can see it all, HDR video, Rack Focusing, Movement Detection etc.

On the 7D, you can only install ML into memory (the camera can't boot into. This procedure will enable the BOOTDISK flag in your cameras Flash ROM, allowing it to load and execute custom code from the memory card. BUT Magic Lantern can't brick a 7D, because it isn't written to flash. Run the Firmware Update process from Canon menu. and even then, the warranty wouldn't be void, only the specific repair.
If you have ever wanted to take shots of lightning ? now you can without buying a Lightning Trigger, just tell your camera to shoot on Exposure change & when it strikes.bob's your uncle your Canon will get that shot, want to know what particular part of a pic is over / under exposed. There's nothing to ' beware,' because Canon said that ML won't void their warranty, unless the software 'bricked' the camera. It is expected that users of this program will be familiar with the MagicLantern competition program, either as a user or as a member of a camera club that uses MagicLantern for its competition presentation, and is using this program to view archived competition files which are available to the club members via a password protected download area. This little bit of 'software' allows your Canon to do so much more than standard, a quote from a you tube video said 'this will turn your £600 camera into one costing £2000', not sure about that but the advanced features it enables is stunning, some would be handy for astrophotograpy i'm sure. Firmware Version 2.0.6 incorporates the following fix: Corrects a phenomenon in which when using the camera with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM or EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens, even if lens aberration correction is set to ''Enable'', correction will not be applied.
